While we often work with similar concerns - stress, overwhelm, trauma, anxiety - Occupational Therapy (OT) and psychology/psychotherapy approach support in different ways. They are complementary fields that work together to provide holistic client-centred care.
Psychologists and psychotherapists focus primarily on the mind i.e. thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and patterns of behaviour. The work is often talk-based and centred on insight, meaning, and processing experiences.
Occupational Therapists, especially somatic and trauma-responsive OTs focusing on mental health, work from the body and the environment outward. We focus on how your nervous system, daily roles, routines, and sensory patterns affect the way you function, parent, cope, and connect. Instead of exploring the “why”, we look at “how is this showing up in your body and your life?” and “what supports your capacity?”.
As an occupational therapist, I blend nervous-system-regulation work, sensory processing, and practical, achievable strategies so you can feel more grounded in your body, confident in your roles, and supported in everyday life.
In short…
Psychology explores the mind.
Somatic, trauma-responsive Occupational Therapy supports the mind through the body, function, nervous system and environment.
